(Where I am: Seattle - Bainbridge)
Day #28: We kayaked, visited the only winery with a vineyard in Seattle and saw a pow wow on Bainbridge Island. At the vineyard, we met the owner who was so amazingly passionate about the unique concept of the Bainbridge Island Winery, we were all inspired. Instead of buying grapes from others to create his wine, he tills his own land for grapes. Property taxes have caused him to shrink his land from a height of 26 acres to the 11 he has now. It's so great to meet people who know their purpose as their passion is infectious.

Other tidbits of history:
We also visited Chief Sealth's grave (he was later baptized and given the Catholic name of Noah Seattle). The area of land we were on traditionally belongs to the Suquamish tribe. That weekend, we happened to chance upon the "Chief Seattle Days" celebration, and in addition to the pow wow, even got to watch the tail end of the Miss Chief Seattle Pageant (little girls 6-10 yrs old, they were sooooo cute)!

Bainbridge Island, incidentally, is also where the first Japanese Americans were ordered to relocate to internment camps by Franklin Roosevelt. Citizens and non-citizens alike were given six days by the military to pack and leave. It was the beginning of one of many painful chapters of WWII and American history.
