On my 355th day of unemployment

Last week I wanted to be in front of this cab which swirved off the road by the Empire State Building and struck a potter and signpost shortly before I arrived to the spot. Life sucked. I was nearing my 365th day of being unemployed and wallowing in self-pity. I had applied numerous times to every hospital in and around New York City. Even Anchorage, Alaska, Arizona and Hawaii didn't want me.

On Monday 5/17 - the 355th day of my unemployment - everything changed. Finally, my five months of volunteering in the ER of Jersey City Medical Center had paid off. The nurse manager called my cell and requested to see me next time I was volunteering. Of course I showed up immediately ... and she told me she wanted to hire me. Two days later, I am still speechless. My life is forever changed.

On Wednesday 5/19, I am notified by Heart to Heart International that my application for Haiti medical relief volunteer work has been approved and that Bayada Nurses will pay for all my expenses. See, a month ago, I applied to volunteer in Haiti as a last ditch effort to get some nursing experience under my belt before I hit the 365th day mark of truly being a rusty nurse. I didn't think my limited nursing experience was enough to qualify me to do relief work but, alas, I had tried all other avenues. Luckily, the ER nurse manager is a strong supporter of humanitarian volunteerism and has encouraged me to go ahead with this Haitian experience. I'm sure it will be a life changing experience. I hope I will be able to perform.

Wow. I am still numb thinking about life ahead. I'm finally pursuing my dream. I am finally going to make a difference!

I know I'm behind on the following pics:
